Bangalore to Pondicherry by Road

Bangalore to Pondicherry by Road

If you are planning a road trip from Bangalore to Pondicherry, then hit the road early morning, so that you can set a fast pace. There are two routes one can take from Bangalore namely 1st option is Krishnagiri – Thiruvannmalai – Tindivanam – Pondy.

The 2nd option is Krishnagiri – Bargur – Thirupattur – Thiruvannamalai – Pondy. Although the 2nd route is longer by an additional 20 kilometers, one can avoid the pot holes in this section.

There are good hotels and restaurants at Krishnagiri and some famous tourist spots also. The Kelavarapalli Reservior project across the river, Ponniar is a great tourist spot and is 7 kilometers from

Krishnagiri town

The “Rajaji Memorial”, situated at Thorapalli, 14 kilometers from Krishnagiri town is also a great tourist spot. Raja Gopalachari was the last “Governor General” of India, and he advocated “Dalit upliftment”. Here his house has been converted into a memorial and there is a library and a picture gallery showcasing the various aspects of his life.

The "Venugopala Swami temple" located at Thali, is a great prilgrimage centre and this temple is famous for its “Chariot festival”, held every year in the month of May. At Krishnagiri, one can stay at "Hotel Velan International" or "Alps Residency" or "Hotel Geeta lodge".

All hotels are good and one can  have a comfortable stay.  Along the route there are small roadside eateries serving traditional Tamilian food.

Before reaching Pondicherry,  one passes by Tiruvanamalai town which has got a famous temple and is a major pilgrimage centre called, the “Annamalaiyal  Temple”.

In this temple each year the “Karthigai Deepam”, festival is celebrated during the day of the full moon and a huge light is lit atop the Annamalai hill, and is witnessed by 3 million devotees.

The temple of “Arunachaleshwara”, is popular with devotees and Shiva’s idol is referred to a “Agni lingam”. His consort "Parvati", is worshipped here as “Unnamulai Amman”. The temple covers a massive area of 10 hectares and is one of the largest in India.

The temple has four “gopurams”. The tallest is the East Gopuram, with a height of   217 feet and is one of the tallest temple towers in India. This temple is home to many smaller shrines, but the chief among them are of Annamalaiyar and Unnamulai Amman.

The temple has six daily rituals starting from dawn till 10 pm in the night and celebrates 12 festivals each year. One can have a quick darshan, at the temple before proceeding to Pondicherry.

The road between Tiruvanamalai and Krishnagiri is bad but from Madivala to Krishnagiri it is good. The scenery is good on this highway and one can take good pictures with one’s camera and relieve pleasant memories of your road trip later on.

Before you start on this journey, make sure that your car has been serviced and that it is in good condition to overcome a bumpy ride, and drive slowly along the bad patches of the highway.
So have a great and a safe journey!!.
