One way in which these beauty spots of the city get intricately intertwined with each other is the intra-city transport from buses to autos to cabs, the transport facilitates movement of traffic from one place in the city to another and externally connects numerous places of public interest. In this context, we shall talk about the Bangalore State Transport Corporation.

The two main constituents of the Bangalore State Transport Corporation are
  1. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC)
  2. Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC)

KSRTC Launched in 1961, this is a road transport organization mainly under the control of the Karnataka state government, with the national government only exercising minor control on it by virtue of its nominal shareholdings. The provisions of the Road Transport Corporation Act, 1950 were used as the founding principles of this organization.

The low body city buses were first introduced in the state transport by the KSRTC, under the label of Volvo B7RLE their improved tyre suspensions and sophisticated air conditioning facilities made them highly acceptable to a large section of the city’s population within a very short period of time.

The division of this organization in 1997 to form the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) paved the way for several administrative changes to take place in the inner sanctums of its operations.

Shortly following the BMTC formation, the body was restructured to form a North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKSRTC), which was specifically meant to serve the transport needs of the north western part of the state.

A north eastern wing was also inaugurated recently to make KSRTC more useful to the state’s transport requirements.

KSTRC holds the distinction of possessing the largest fleet of Volvo buses under the control of a state government in India.

This bus transport body is famous for the way it amalgamates luxury and necessity within the domains of its operations besides providing world class air conditioned, luxury travelling facilities, the KSRTC is also known for its economical services that are popular in most of the villages of Karnataka.

BMTC This is yet another vital organ of the Bangalore State Transport Corporation and is a government agency that is in charge of operating the public transport buses in Bangalore.

The Bangalore Metropolitan State Transport Corporation was born out of the city’s growing needs to expand its boundaries and accommodate the steadily increasing inflow of people from various corners of India into Bangalore.

The BMTC fares are considered to be in the highest ranges, when compared with all other bus service charges in India; however, the high rates gradually get levelled out as the length of the journey increases.

Analysts attribute the cause of such exorbitant rates to the elitist ways of the Bangalore population, unlike other parts of Bangalore which are under regime of moderate rates of KSRTC.

To make traveling in the modern day Bangalore State Transport Corporation buses more meaningful and economical, the authorities nowadays issue bus passes to interested travelers.

These bus passes can be used to travel in the any of AC/non-AC buses run by the BMTC and their validity extends from the time of purchase to midnight on that particular day.

A recently developed scheme allows senior citizens, traveling in the BMTC buses, to avail concessions on producing their ID cards which can establish their ages. Half the normal ticket price is considered as concession for travelling children below 12 years of age.

The Bangalore Metropolitan State Transport Corporation uses six major bus stations to conduct its day to day operations, and these bus stations are located at strategically important points in city.

One of the major objectives that the Bangalore State Transport Corporation sought to achieve through the creation of BMTC was making transport in the city easier and more simplified for the heterogeneous population residing there.
